This week at Friday Cheers: Shovels and Rope / Phil Cook

The rain will pass and the temp will be good for foot-stomping!

Things kick off at 6:00 PM; tickets are $10, and children under 12 are free. Here’s a quick preview of what to expect this week, and, of course, there’s more info on their Facebook page.

Shovels and Rope

  • Genre: Americana folk rock with some occasional R&B rhythms
  • Sounds kinda like: When you look down and you realize you’ve been keeping the beat by slapping the shit out of a weathered picnic table. Where did the picnic table even come from??
  • Sweet jam: “Perfect Day”
  • Listen to the album: [Busted Jukebox Volume 1 on Apple Music »]https://itun.es/us/kL2S-()
  • shovelsandrope.com

Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent came together to make this, their baby, Shovels & Rope. Is it greater than the sum of their parts? Is it something you’ll be able to turn off once you start listening to it? Will your feet start moving of their own accord? You be the judge.

Here’s a video I can’t stop watching:

Phil Cook

This guy by day helps kids learn about science and by night is a multi-faceted singer-songwriter who employs a variety of guitars, banjos, other instruments, and human voices to make his sound. Guys, I love a good slow-paced electric blues solo.

Watch him play “Great Tide” at an outdoor performance at Duke University in 2015:
