The Oscars and RVA: Beasts of the Southern Wild and Lincoln score multiple nominations

Two films with local ties were given Oscar nominations this morning.

Two films with RVA ties earned Oscar nominations this morning. Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, which filmed in Richmond, garnered the most nominations with 12, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis).

Beasts of the Southern Wild also earned Best Picture and Best Director nominations, along with Best Actress, Quvenzhané Wallis, who, at the age of nine, is the youngest actress to ever receive an Oscar nominee.

We spoke with one of Beasts co-producers, Richmond-native Michael Gottwald, and he had this to say: “This is so crazy, so beyond the realm of anything we were thinking about when we made this film. This movie has given me so much, today is just the newest, highest wave of joy.”

  1. Always a pleasure to see RVA in the spotlight. It’s unbelievable how young that actress is and to already be nominated for an Oscar? Amazing!
