Marc Broussard

Modlin Center for the Arts • Sept. 24th

Singer/songwriter Marc Broussard has mixed funk and blues with distinct Southern roots since his 2002 debut release. He’s shared the stage with acts like Willie Nelson, Gavin DeGraw, and the Dave Matthews Band and has delighted audiences for years. His new album A Life Worth Living is getting rave reviews and is his highest charting album to date.

Cracker Acoustic featuring David Lowery & Johnny Hickman

Ashland Coffee & Tea • Sept. 26th

Richmond’s own Cracker gained national attention with their hit songs “Low” and “Euro-Trash Girl” in the early 90s, putting David Lowery and Johnny Hickman at the forefront of alt-rock at the time. Eight platinum and gold albums later, the band is still kicking and giving Richmond and the rest of the world a great thing to listen to.

Broken Bells

The National • Sept. 28th

Broken Bells, James Mercer of The Shins and Brian Burton (better known as Danger Mouse), are back after winning over the music community with its self-titled debut album in 2010. The new album, After the Disco, is already being praised by music critics and fans alike.

Fall Line Fest

The National, November Theatre, The Broadberry, Strange Matter, The Camel, Gallery 5 • Sept. 5th & 6th

This is it, people! One of the biggest music festivals to hit Richmond starts off September with a bang. 50+ bands, six local venues, a huge brunch, local art, and two days of insanity. Among the bands playing are Real Estate, The Hold Steady, Death, Matthew E. White, Fairweather, Avers, The Mary Onettes, Rapsody and many, many others. The schedule of performances has been released, so start planning your nights now. Still need tickets? Good thing they’re still on sale.

David Mayfield Parade

The Camel • Sept. 7th

The indie alt-country fun of David Mayfield Parade instantly caught my attention with his catchy, upbeat songs that are full of humor and showmanship. Mayfield is a Grammy-nominated artist and has played with the Avett Brothers, Mumford & Sons, Jessica Lea Mayfield, and at Bonnaroo (so he’s got some credibility here, folks). His brand new album, Strangers, comes out right after this show, so he’ll definitely have some new tunes to play.

Silent Music Revival

Gallery 5 • Sept. 7th

The monthly Silent Music Revival event, where a classic silent short film is projected while local musicians act as the live soundtrack, is always a treat to experience. This month’s show features the 1930 silent film Borderline with a live musical score by Richmond funk/reggae artist Mighty Joshua.

Manatree (formerly Herro Sugar), Clair Morgan, and Spacemonster

The Camel • Sept. 13th

Local indie pop rock band Herro Sugar is no more. They haven’t gone anywhere; they just changed their name and are still delivering the same upbeat indie pop they’re known for. Now playing under the name Manatree, the band is working on a full release for later this year. Clair Morgan (the band, not just the person) and Spacemonster will also play.

Matisyahu

The National • Sept. 16th

A devout Hasidic Jew performing reggae takes people by surprise sometimes. But once you hear Matisyahu, there’s no turning back from his high energy beat boxing. His fifth studio album Akeda came out in June, so he’ll have a bunch of new songs to share.

Ann Beretta

The Broadberry • Sept. 20th

Richmond punk rock band Ann Beretta formed in 1996 and spent many years defining Richmond’s punk scene and playing with bands including Hot Water Music, the Bouncing Souls, Less Than Jake, and Avail. They last played Richmond in 2008 and went their separate ways. But now, they’re back together for this show with the recently-reunited punk group Fun Size. All advance ticket buyers will receive a free digital EP with new/unreleased songs by Ann Beretta and Fun Size.

Steady Sounds 4th Anniversary Record Swap and Dance Party

Strange Matter • Sept. 20th

Local record store Steady Sounds (who recently merged with Blue Bones Vintage) celebrates four years of serving awesome vinyl goods to RVA and will present a free record swap and dance party. The record swap is from 12:00 – 4:00 PM with local and regional dealers and collectors selling quality soul, jazz, rock, punk, and more. From 9:00 PM – 2:00 AM, DJs will host a marathon of funk and soul jams. DJ’s will include George Mahood, The Scorpio Brothers, DJ NiteKrawler (Moneytown DC), Grits And Gravy (Charlottesville), Michael Murphy (Mellow Madness WRIR, Body Talk), Sean Lovelace (Hustle & Bump, Cosmic Slop WRIR), Mr. Felty (SoulPower) Ryan Thomas (7 Cities Soul Club), Aaron Bushman, and Kevin Longendyke (Ar-Kaics).
