Richmond International Film Festival 2016 recommended viewing

We did some research, and here’s what we recommend.

You can’t be several places at once, unfortunately. Otherwise, you could see every single one of the 150 movies at the Richmond International Film Festival. If, like us, you do not have superpowers, here are the films we recommend.

For more information on the festival, the schedule, and how to buy tickets, check out rvafilmfestival.com and our 2015 interview with Heather Waters, 2016 Fascinating person and leader of the fest itself!

LOUDER THAN BOMBS

INDIA’S DAUGHTER

Leslee Udwin, India

A documentary about the gang-rape and murder of Jyoti Singh in 2012. It’s hard to watch, but it’s ultimately optimistic.

A very gritty, vigilante-style documentary about Ukraine’s troubles after the fall of the Soviet Union, particularly those issues affecting children.

CROSSING STREETS

Marc Hutchins, USA

Giving you a break from the “there are tough things going on in the world” films, this dramedy is just what you need.

OBLIVION SEASON

Abbas Rafei, Islamic Republic of Iran

This movie–about the struggles of women in Iran–is rumored to be one that grows and swells and leaves you exhausted

DAY RELEASE

Geoffrey Cowper, Spain

An action film, but a fresh one!

MADINA’S DREAM

Sudan is such an amazing place to learn about.
