Richmond Cycling Corps, local artists come together to support youth Friday

Over 23 custom-painted Italian bicycle frames will be auctioned off Friday night to support challenged youth in low-income neighborhoods.

It’s all part of an event Richmond Cycling Corps is putting on in partnership with ART 180, Legacy: 2020. The event is billed as a party to celebrate the future of youth from public housing in Richmond. The specialty art auction and reception will take place at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts on September 18th at 7:30 PM and will be hosted by Andrew Freiden from NBC12.

The gala will immediately follow the official opening ceremony of the UCI World Championships, where eight youth from the Richmond Cycling Corps program will officially present Team USA to the world stage.

“Our mission is to re-engineer the behavioral and developmental gaps that are prevalent among youth in public housing,” says Craig Dodson, the founder and executive director of Richmond Cycling Corps.

“Both art and sport are imperative to the growth of our youth and their ability to alter their course in life. Noting the particularity good timing with the Richmond 2015 World Championships, the idea emerged that this would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a truly special event to celebrate our 5th year of programming.”

The event auction, presented by CapTech, will feature custom-painted Italian bike frames designed by RVA artists including Ed Trask, Chris Milk, Hamilton Glass, Matt Lively, and many more. All proceeds from the auction will benefit Richmond Cycling Corps and ART180.

Tickets to the event are $150 per person.

To see the bike frames, you can visit Richmond Bicycle Studio at 1717 Summit Avenue in Scott’s Addition from noon until 6:00 PM daily.
