I made my way over to the Mayor’s press conference on Brown’s Island to find out about this new “active lifestyle event” that everyone has been all a-twitter about. Turns out, it’s pretty exciting.

On May 15th and 16th, Sports Backers and Venture Richmond are partnering up to put on a Dominion-sponsored river-centric festival…

Dominion Riverrock: Richmond’s Riverlife Celebration

During the conference, Mayor Dwight Jones cited the Strategic Plan (you remember that thing?) and it’s documentation of the fact that Richmond’s citizens view the river as its most important natural resource, one they want to have access to and protect.

It seems that Dominion Riverrock is a response to this demand. The two-day event will include a free concert from Rusted Root, a 5k Mud Run, a 10k trail run, a rowing regatta, freestyle bike competitions, dog long jumping contests (!!!), and interactive opportunities that will encourage environmental stewardship.

It’s free to get in, but participation in athletic events will require a nominal fee. Proceeds from Dominion Riverrock will benefit the James River Fund, the official charity of the event created by Sports Backers and Venture Richmond to provide grants to volunteer groups working to enhance recreational use of public space along the James River, as well as clean-up and maintenance efforts for those areas.

• James River Advisory Council
• James River Outdoor Coalition
