NBC12 report cites complaints about ‘pornographic’ and ‘demonic’ Carytown mural

An overreaction by a local news station meant to stir the pot or a legitimate concern?

From NBC12’s Chris Thomas:

City mural projects are out of control! That is the complaint from a Carytown business owner who contacted 12 On Your Side about a mural along Belmont Avenue. Some even want it removed.

Lindsay Kildoff said her 6-year-old daughter could not believe her eyes.

“It’s the first thing she noticed when we got out of the car,” said Kildoff. “She said Mom look at that over there. That’s inappropriate.”

A Carytown business owner who wishes to remain anonymous put his concerns in writing.

“City mural projects are out of control,” wrote the business owner. “Carytown’s latest pornographic mural is posted next to the front door to my office. Decapitated woman spread eagle painted to side of building. 15 South Belmont Ave on the side of the Design Center of Richmond. City has nothing in place to regulate these murals. Families and children frequent area.”

The report follows a CBS6 story in May in which concerns were raised over a mural being painted on the side of the Taboo adult bookstore in Chesterfield.

Is this a legitimate concern or an attempt to stir the pot? What are your thoughts on the latest murals to go up around town this past month as part of the Richmond Mural Project overall?

Decapitated? Spread eagle?! I clearly see a woman with a head doing some sort of handstand.

What makes it pornographic? The mere presence of a nipple? There is nothing sexual about this at all.

What makes it pornographic are people’s puritanical stances on sex and nudity. Is there a nation as sexually repressed as ours?
