Live music in September: Pokey LaFarge and Gin Blossoms
Get ready people! September is here and this month’s live music pleasures include bands returning to Balliceaux, Positive No releasing a new album, and the Gin Blossoms bringing the 90s to town.
Pokey LaFarge
Modlin Center for the Arts • September 24th, 7:30 PM
Pokey LaFarge has created a vibrant collection of work that brings together elements of early jazz, ragtime, country blues, western swing, and more. The group released Something in the Water this year to major acclaim. ($9 – $18)
An Intimate Evening with the Gin Blossoms
Capital Ale House • September 27th, 4:00 – 7:00 PM
Admit it. As soon as you read “Gin Blossoms,” you starting singing “Hey Jealousy” or “Follow You Down.” Personally, I immediately went to “‘Til I Hear It From You” because Empire Records is one of the best movies ever. Capital Ale House’s Music Hall is going back to the angst-filled years of the ’90s as they present two intimate acoustic full band sets. ($40 – $70)

Jessy Carolina and the Hot Mess
Balliceaux • September 3rd, 8:00 PM
After taking the summer off to renovate and rejuvenate, Balliceaux is back with a new menu and a bunch of new shows. The first band to grace the new Balliceaux stage will be traditional jazz dance band Jessy Carolina and the Hot Mess from New York City. The ensemble specializes in early American roots and jazz and will be a welcome way to break in the “new” music venue. ($5 at the door)
RVA Rock’n Art Fest
The National • September 5th, 4:00 – 10:00 PM
Seven bands and some of Richmond’s most talented artists are teaming up to create a unique night of entertainment and art to support children in need. Presented by Students Live Benefit Concerts to benefit nonprofits Beds For Kids and Stop Child Abuse Now, RVA Rock ‘n Art Fest will feature live performances by Against Grace, Big Mama Shakes, Brighter the Moon, Peter Kelly, Sun Box, T0W3RS, and Tristen. ($10)
Titus Andronicus
The Camel • September 13th, 8:00 PM
The band that borrows its name from one of Shakespeare’s epic tragedies is back. Indie-punk band Titus Andronicus effortlessly mixes old-fashioned rock with the anger of punk–its energetic sound influenced by bands like the Pixies. This summer, the band released its latest record, The Most Lamentable Tragedy, which takes the form of a 30-song rock opera. ($15)
Talib Kweli
The Broadberry • September 16th, 9:00 PM
The Brooklyn-based rapper is known as one of the most lyrically-gifted, socially aware and politically insightful rappers in the last 20 years. He’s worked with Mos Def, Kanye West, and Madlib, and he can craft insane lyrics while rhyming over virtually any type of beat. ($20 in advance; $25 day of show)
Taking Back Sunday
The National • September 17th, 7:30 PM
My emo-punk-indie 20-year-old self squealed at this news. Do yourself a favor and listen to to Tell All Your Friends and Louder Now. They are incredible albums. ($27.50 in advance; $30 day of show)
Positive No Record Release Show

The Richmond noisy dream-pop group celebrates the release of its debut album, Glossa, on Negative Fun Records. The band also had its latest video for “Pedal Through” featured on NPR, thanks to its hilarious rendition of “Indie Rock Parking Lot.” Rebecca Gates–formerly of The Spinanes–and Nelly Kate will open the show. A portion of the door profits will be donated to Diversity Richmond. ($8 at the door)
Know Good Beer & Music Festival
Brown’s Island • September 19th, 2:00 – 9:00 PM
Enjoy the best in Virginia and national craft brews all day on Brown’s Island with more than 30 breweries and more than 60 beers to sample. There will be live performances from Blitzen Trapper, Kopecky, Those Darlins, and Sleepwalkers. Proceeds will go to help support independent radio station WNRN. ($20 Non-Tasting Admission; $40 Tasting Admission; $50 Regular Admission at Event)
