Live Music in January: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Video Games Live, The Trillions, Jackson Browne

It’s a brand new year! Welcome 2016 with all the great shows coming to Richmond venues near you.

It’s a new year, and that means resolutions you will break by February at the latest. It also means more great shows coming to Richmond, which makes your “See more live music” resolution a lot easier to keep. Check out some of the big shows coming to RVA just this month.

The Trillions with Clair Morgan and Spooky Cool

The Broadberry • January 8th, 9:00 PM

Richmond rockers the Trillions are back with enough rock and roll mayhem to satisfy your post-holiday blues. Along for the ride are seven-piece rock outfit Clair Morgan and the electric psych sounds of Spooky Cool, a brand new project from ex-members of Zac Hryciak & the Jungle Beat. Everyone who purchases a pre-sale ticket for this show will get a free copy of the Trillions’ latest album Superposition as well as a free copy of Clair Morgan’s first album No Notes. ($8)

Donna the Buffalo

Capital Ale House • January 10th, 9:00 PM

Donna the Buffalo has been playing its feel-good Americana roots rock for more than 25 years to huge crowds. Expect to dance a lot at this show. ($15-$17)

KRS-One

The National • January 22nd, 8:00 PM

One of the leaders in hip-hop during the 80s and 90s, KRS-One comes to the National to support his new album, Now Hear This. That’s his 18th dang album. ($27 in advance; $37 day of show)

An Evening with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

Altria Theater • January 22nd, 8:00 PM

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, the duo responsible for the songs “Thrift Shop,” “Can’t Hold Us,” and “Same Love,” are playing a series of intimate shows at historic theaters this year, including Richmond’s own Mosque I mean Landmark I mean Altria Theater. In 2015, the duo also released the single “Downtown” from an album that’s yet to be released. As is evident in a lot of their lyrics, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have been committed to issues of equity and justice and are partnering with Plus One so that $1 from every ticket purchased on their tour will go to support Equal Justice Initiative, Youth Speaks, and the 30/30 Project. ($39.50-$69.50)

Richmond Symphony presents Video Games Live

Altria Theater • January 23rd, 8:00 PM

The Richmond Symphony will be playing the hits of Mario, Zelda, Tetris, Final Fantasy, and all your other favorite electronic worlds. Video Games Live is an immersive concert experience featuring the energy and excitement of a rock concert with synchronized video screen visuals, state-of-the-art lighting, stage show production and on-stage interactive segments. ($20-$70)

Big Mama Shakes single release show

The Camel • January 23rd, 9:00 PM

Big Mama Shakes has had one hell of a 2015. But that doesn’t mean the group is slowing down. The Americana rockers will celebrate the release of their new single “Weight of a Heavy Heart” with a big party at the Camel along with Western Green and Basement Club. The single will be available on iTunes and Spotify on Friday, January 29th. ($5)

An Evening with Jackson Browne

Carpenter Theatre • January 23rd, 8:00 PM

Known for his iconic anthems like “Running on Empty” and “Somebody’s Baby,” singer-songwriter Jackson Browne will be performing acoustic songs from across his entire body of work for an intimate performance. ($37)

Moon Taxi

The National • January 26th, 7:30 PM

Alt-rock outfit Moon Taxi has been steadily gaining popularity over the past year with appearances at music festivals such as Bonnaroo, the Governor’s Ball, and Lollapalooza. Their fourth studio LP, Daybreaker, was released back in October. If you haven’t seen these guys in concert, you’re in for a treat. ($18 in advance; $23 day of show)

Reverend Horton Heat

The Broadberry • January 29th, 8:00 PM

Probably the most popular psychobilly artist of all time, Reverend Horton Heat built a cult following in the 90s. Fans will be able to relive those days when the good Reverend comes to the Broadberry with special guests Unknown Hinson, Nashville Pussy, and Igor and the Red Elvises. This one may sell out, so scoop up tickets now. ($25)

Howie Day

The Tin Pan • January 31st, 7:00 PM

Singer-songwriter Howie Day is probably best known for his early 2000s hits “She Says” and “Collide.” He’s taken some time off writing new material and released a new album Lanterns in early 2015, so expect a lot of heartfelt angsty music when he comes to the Tin Pan. ($30 in advance; $35 at the door)
