Ombak front man Bryan Hooten delivers his first of four essays on RVA News devoted to "exploring music’s relationship with negative space." This first essay of the "Framing the Void" series (a phrase often used by Hooten to describe his approach to music composition and his work with Ombak) discusses "the ways in which any piece of music, through its beginning and ending, creates a frame around our experience of time." He points out that unlike other media like photographs or books, with music "the audience experiences...a rigid and universal period of time, which is objectively the same for all listeners," citing John Cage's 4'33" as an example of framing the silence which surrounds and encapsulates it.

Bryce McCormick, under the name Write Before Right, is composing a new song every day for an entire year and has a blog to post his creations daily. His three rules for writing the songs are: "The song has to be at least 2 minutes long, it cannot be an instrumental song--it has to be lyrically driven, and the song cannot be about the process of writing a song."
