If the weather holds out, the Richmond Flying Squirrels make their debut tonight versus the Bowie Baysox in the opener of a four game away series. If not tonight, Friday should for sure see the first game of the season against the team that might become our arch rivals.

The Baysox have a history of being a decent team. They have only had one losing season in the past 6 years, and won the Southern Division of the Eastern League in 2008. Bowie (pronounced boo-ee) is also only 30 miles or so away from their parent Baltimore Orioles, and have the 2nd largest stadium in the Eastern League. For 2010 they’ve added last year’s Carolina League Pitcher of the Year, Player of the Year, and Batting Champion and expectations are high.

With all of that said, we might hate the Baysox. Richmond/Bowie could become something akin to UVA/VT or maybe VCU/ODU anyway. Bowie and Richmond are both in the Western Division of the Eastern League and will be competing directly for a play-off berth. At 124 miles away, Bowie is the closest opponent to Richmond (and they’re planning an invasion in May…). To top it off, we play them 29 times this season, more than any other team. How we do against the Baysox will go a long way in shaping the season.

Go get’em, Squirrels!

What the hell is a Baysock?

I believe it’s a windsock. Important stuff on the Chesapeake when you’re trying to avoid sandbars.

Or maybe it’s an obscure fashion — like men’s sock garters worn with shorts and dark dress socks.

  4. We (as in me and the Flying Squirrels) are playing the Baysocks 29 TIMES?

I’m glad our team already came with a rival, I fully support this. Although if picking the team’s rival was anything like picking the team’s name I would have liked to have seen the list of options. I would have suggested the Enon Girl’s softball team circa 1994. Jerks.

  5. Yeah, one of the peculiar charms of the Eastern League is that the schedule is imbalanced. The Squirrels play each of the 11 other teams, but not an equal number of times. There are 3 teams that we play 20+ times, and few that we only see 5 or 6 times.

  6. I have fond memories of Bowie, and a girl there who stole my heart for a brief period of time. I’d applaud the Squirrels’ for playing the Bowie team 29 times if she was still living there, but since she’s not I think they’re nuts.

  7. Taber over at Nutcap has picked this up and goes where I was reluctant:

I’d also like to jump in and point out that their mascot is terrifying and looks like something I’ve pulled out when cleaning the garbage disposal. What is that thing? Is it a baysock? If it is, well, baysox are officially my worst nightmare. My own personal hell would be to be trapped in an elevator for all eternity with like 18 of these things.

  8. The Baysox is a result of a cute letter written to the team management asking them to change the name because the author’s Dad liked the Red Sox or something like that.

The mascot (Louie) is definitely scary. Every time I ask my 3 year old if he likes Louie, he assures me that he doesn’t.
