Yesterday, in a surprise press conference, Virginia Tech Athletic Director Jim Weaver announced that he had fired head men’s basketball coach Seth Greenberg. Greenberg had been the Hokies’ head coach since the 2003 season, presiding over Tech’s transition from the Big East to the ACC. He was by no means unsuccessful,1 but the lack of NCAA tournament appearances (one) and poor showings at the NIT left some Hokie fans asking for change.
Ask and ye shall receive!
Now, fellow Hokies, we are in for one of the most exciting sportstimes: a coaching search! And, if you’re a fan of the hometown-hero Rams you’re going to recognize a lot of the names popping up to fill Greenberg’s shoes:
- Gregg Marshall–Head coach of Wichita State and VCU’s most recent NCAA tournament victim.
- Chris Mooney–Head coach of the University of Richmond who last year after the Spider’s Sweet 16 run signed a 10-year contract extension.
- Blaine Taylor–Head coach of Old Dominion.
- Jeff Capel–Former VCU head coach, current Duke assistant by way of a failed Oklahoma head coaching job.
And of course no list of possible head coaches would be complete without Shaka Smart. There is zero chance, no chances out of all the chances, that Coach Smart would leave VCU to coach the Hokies–so let’s not even talk about that one.
I’ve seen a couple other names thrown around, but maybe most interesting is former VT great Dell Curry, father of Stephen and Seth Curry (both of whom are awesome at basketball and were not recruited by VT).
Whoever ends up with the job, it’s going to be exciting to watch the process.

- Over Greenberg’s eight years in the ACC his teams finished 4th, 10th, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 3rd, 4th, and 9th in conference–for an average of 5.5. Which is actually pretty great. ↩

I really can’t think of a more unrealistic group to be targeted by VT (except Shaka Smart, who is on everyone’s wish list – but hopefully stays at VCU for a long, long time). Seriously, if you are an AD at an ACC school – do you think your donors want UofR boring ball (Chris Money) or Blaine Taylor – who is not much different than Seth Greenberg – ball? H— N0! Other than MAYBE Greg Marshall, those 4 names are B list AT BEST. VT should be thinking Duke assistant Collins, or maybe even try for a Mark Few – type name. An ACC program thinks bigger than this list (btw -I saw these names, and a few more, in David Teel’s article earlier and just didn’t get why anyone would really think VT would aim so middle (again, God forbid, with the exception of Shaka Smart). Now, regarding VT’s plane being in Richmond overnight, if you look at their flight log it is all over the state all of the time. That doesn’t mean there hasn’t been any communication with a Mooney or … No, I can’t say it! But for what it’s worth, I saw an interesting tweet last night that Mike Rhodes (VCU assistant) was mentioned. I figure that is a big long shot, much more unlikely than the others named above. Not that he isn’t a very capable coach, because he is. But he doesn’t have head coaching experience at an ACC level school (formerly head man at Randolph Macon College). Just thought I’d throw that out there.
