Soccer supporters come together for Charleston

Love Conquers Hate

In the unwritten rulebook of being a soccer supporter one of the golden rules is not to wear a rival teams colors. That rulebook was thrown out for one night as supporter groups across the country donned the gear of rival Charleston Battery.

During the game Kickers game on Saturday a moment of silence was held during the ninth minute to honor those killed earlier in the week in Charleston. Traditionally the Red Army (Richmond Kickers supporter group) does a chant of “Stand Up for Richmond” during the 43rd minute it was switched up to “Stand Up for Charleston”. At the tailgate and through online donations the Red Army has raised close to $200 that will be donated to the Mother Emanuel Hope Fund.

More pictures and thoughts on the evening can be found at the 400 North Media blog.

It will not be an unfinished and undecided game or the chaos of the storm that will be remembered. It is the simple and sincere gesture of support and hope that was displayed in the stands. A moment where we were reminded that in the end we are all part of One Team.
