I wanted to add (update the above info.) that Rowlett's Bicycles carries mountain bikes, commuter bikes, and road bikes from Giant, Felt, Kona, & Redline. They can also get Yeti & Independent Fabrication also.

Geez, Murden, you really are a conceited asshole. Please excuse Jonah for not realizing that you were only interested in covering city shops. No need to be a dick about correcting her. Oh, and sorry the suburbs are such desecrated landscape. Do yourself a favor and get out of the city more often.

Thx for the info, Jonah.

I don't think Richmond is a very good city for bike enthusiasts. Nobody communtes to work by bike because there are zero bike lanes. How many malls, stores, or work places do you see with a place meant to park bikes? I also remember there was a lot of public disatisfaction back when they redid the nickel bridge and didn't add a bike lane to it. We barely have sidewalks anywhere outside of the city. People have to go all the way out to West Creek(which is actually in Goochland) just to have room to ride a road bike. And our bike shops are closed on Sunday and pretty much keep banker's hours during the week.

The only decent place for beginning mountain bikers to ride is pony pasture. With all the rest (powhite park, deep run park, buttermilk trail, and poor farm park) you have to already be in crazy good shape to even ride them, much less enjoy them.

I didn't "forget" them: I was only writing about shops in the city. You start sprawling out into what happens in the counties and you end up covering shit in Chester.

Ack. You forgot my favorite bike shop -- 3Sports. Ben and Jennifer at 3Sports in the Near West End (near Tuckahoe Elementary) have the best service. It's affordable, often they'll fix it while you wait, and teach you how to do it or answer questions for you if they have time.
Plus, they are just super nice.

Thanks for highlighting our independent bike shops. It seems like more people are riding every day. Hopefully, I can ride to work more this year. See you at MLK.

Its not just an almost complete lack of supporting public infrastructure, it also an almost complete lack of supporting private infrastructure, so many new buildings lack bicycle racks and paths. The bicycle shops being a nice exception. Thanks for the article, John.
