Uninvited black bear visits Mosby Court

There was some unusual excitement in Mosby Court last night. It started with this report from RPD:

The Richmond Police Department is advising residents and visitors in the area of Mosby Court to use caution as an adult black bear was spotted there early Tuesday morning.

The bear was initially sighted by a citizen at 11 p.m. June 29 in the 1800 block of Rogers Street. It was last seen just after midnight in a wooded area near the intersection of Coalter and Redd streets.

Police are asking citizens to keep their distance from the bear and stress not to approach it for any reason. Animal Control and the Game Warden have been notified.

Anyone who has a sighting of the bear is encouraged to call the Richmond Police non-emergency line at 804-646-5100.

According to RTD the bear was tranquilized by Game and Inland Fisheries at about 2:00 AM.

Adult black bears are approximately 4 to 7 feet from nose to tail, and two to three feet high at the withers. Males are larger than females. Black bears have small eyes, rounded ears, a long snout, large non retractable claws, a large body, a short tail, and shaggy hair. In Virginia most black bears are true black in color unlike black bears found in more western states that can be shades of red, brown or blond.
