The popular series, American Life recounts an article from 1853 which gives an eye witness account of the slave trade in Richmond during the year 1853.

The image above showed the going rate at the time of the article and came with the advice that “the market was dull at present, and there could never be a more favorable time to buy”. This occurred in Shockoe Bottom where now sit restaurants, clubs, offices and homes.
