RPD unveils new police cars and design
The modern models get a retro look.
The Richmond Police Department unveiled new vehicles and a new color scheme for its fleet yesterday in Libby Park. New Ford Interceptor vehicles will replace the current Crown Victoria models, as the Interceptors are considered the new industry standard in police cruisers with added safety features, improved gas mileage, and cleaner emissions.
The RPD also debuted a new black-and-white color scheme for its vehicles, replacing the current white-with-blue accents design. The RPD will rollout 21 new cruisers in the coming weeks.

I don’t like it. It looks too mean. I’ve always liked how RPD cars seemed more friendly looking, with the blue and dated skyline photos. Now they look like the CHP. Lame.
Aren’t we a Commonwealth?
I’ll also miss the skyline.
I am all about cleaner, more efficient cars, but I just have to imagine that there was some better way that that money could have been spent that would actually make a difference in public safety in the city. I guess making the cops feel happy and important in shiny new cars is the priority here.
@Leah – I’m quite sure that vehicles for the police are a standard public safety budget line item. As in, they always buy a certain number of vehicles on some regular interval to replace the oldest vehicles. I guess you’d rather them protecting our streets in beat up, unreliable old cars. You’d probably be the first to complain that it took them too long to help you in an emergency.
More intimidating … more authoritative … and I love it!
Looks like a Los Angeles Police Car. I guess most people identify the B&W paint job as a police car. Indiferent opinion……I doubt it will do much to curb crime.
Actually it was quite expensive to keep the skyline on the old cars pretty and vibrant when it faded – which it did often. These cars may save money in the long-run. I loved the look of the skyline on the cars – but I really do like the black and whites!
