At the risk of becoming a broken record, I again say: If only these parents (and their counterparts) put this much effort into their existing RPS school, imagine how many more children could be getting a better education.

Every school should be so lucky to have a group of such committed parents. PH will become one of Richmond's great elementary schools.

Those parent's whose children do not get into PH should become as committed to their assigned schools and raise these other schools up to the heights that PH strives for.

Good Luck all!

From a parent whose children spent most of their school years in RPS.

All good stuff, but Kristin, and the dozens of others that have put countless hours into this, knew going in that the contract had eliminated founders parents from getting in. It was that or no school. Ms. Britt is incorrect though. This is not a neighborhood school. This is a historic opportunity to cause a paradigm shift in approaches to education in Richmond and all over Virginia. A neighborhood school could not have such an impact. All involved need to remember that important facet of this newly formed institution.

Not an opponent of PH, but wouldn't it be great if every Richmond parent could rest easy knowing their child could attend a good, neighborhood school?

End the siphoning off of millions by the 'economic development', corporate welfare crowd for boondoggles like Center Stage, the 'Greater' Richmond Convention Center, Sixth Street Marketplace, and now the push for a new Coliseum, and maybe we will find out.

Schools before stadiums!

They need to make an exception for these parents who worked so hard for the community and lost the bingo drawing. Very sad and I hope something changes for them.

I think the final paragraph is key. You have to have done that job for the greater good. That rule is to keep it from being a 'click' school. Only getting in if your parent was a founder... The lottery keeps it fair. I feel their sadness, and I appreciate all of their hard work, but everyone deserves a chance to get in. My Cora is only 1.5 yrs old and I plan to apply when she is of age and every year until she gets in..

*sigh* i get it...but it just seems so incredibly wrong and heartbreaking for the Larson's...and others. I hope Kristen (and other founders) know and feel a deep gratitude from the community for all she has done for the kids of Richmond.

What about schools like Perrymont, state schools for the underprivileged, with almost no funding period. Where is their fundraiser from the governor?

Wow! I can't belive that this article was published today, March 12. Seven hours ago I received a call informing me that my daughter was number 22 out of 23 students in a lottery for 6 Kindergarten spots at a Michigan charter school. This is not just any school but a school that I taught at for nine years. After resigning five years ago to start raising my family, I was fortunate enough to be selected for the school board for which I have served since. That would be a total of fourteen years of service, which I had hoped would count for something. Unfortunately, Michigan law states that board members must participate in the lottery. I never believed that my daughter would not be able to attend the school that I love and have given much of my life to, but that has become my reality. I am crushed and couldn't imagine anyone else being in a similar situation-until right now. Thank you for sharing this experience.
