Good Morning, RVA: You can do it!

Weekend, I’ve missed you so!

Good morning, RVA! It’s 30 °F, and we’re back to freezing our faces off (except for those of us with scarves). Highs today hit the upper-30s, but drop to cold cold cold tonight. Then, expect a 50 °F temperature swing from Saturday morning’s lows in the 20s to Monday afternoon’s highs in the 70s. If you were a thermometer, the next couple of days would be your Richmond Marathon.

It’s also gonna rain on Sunday.

Water cooler

This Rolling Stone article about rape, sexual abuse, and a culture of indifference at UVA was yesterday’s longread, but needs mentioning again. It’s long and painful to read, but important. Since the article published, the president issued a statement, and the university rector announced that UVA would “engage independent counsel to advise and assist the Board of Visitors and University administration in determining how the University can better deal with the issue of campus sexual assaults, including how best to maximize opportunities for successful criminal prosecution of sexual misconduct cases.” The independent counsel retained? Mark Filip, a member of the Phi Kappa Psi, the fraternity in the Rolling Stone article. Disappointing.

As you can imagine business has not been great for The Video Fan, a true-blue, brick-and-mortar video store. With changing times and doom on the horizon, they launched a Kickstarter a while back to raise $35,000 towards leasing their building for one year. I scoffed! But, and this seems crazy you guys, they met their goal with hours to spare! They’ve got the momentum heading into the fourth quarter, let’s see what they can do with it #sportsanalogy.

Here’s a thoughtful article from the head of Norfolk’s SPCA about feral cats and “TNR” or “trap, neuter, return.” Figuring out what to do with feral cats, that often cannot be adopted into a home, is a surprisingly complex issue. I had no idea.

Don’t forget about InLight tonight. Brave the frigid temps, my friends, it’s worth it!

Last night, President Obama said some things about immigration as he enters the official DILLIGAF phase of his presidency. When faced with complex national policy news, I just read about it on Vox. This is no exception.

Sports!

Note: I’ve been informed that the correct geometrical description of an American football is “prolate spheroid” not “oblate spheroid.” Apologies to the small cross section of humans that love both math and sports, of which I am a member.

  • Rams dominated the “Maryland Eastern Shore” Eagles to the tune of 106-66.
  • Wahoos (roundball) host a dangerous George Washington team tonight at 7:00 PM. Remember what happened last time a hot A-10 team came to John Paul Jones…
  • Hokies (prolate spheroid) head south to face Wake Forest at 12:30 PM. With a win, the Hokies would become bowl-eligible for the 22nd year in a row.
  • Spiders take on High Point at 1:00 PM this Saturday and hope to improve after the misstep against ODU.
  • Hokies (roundball) travel to App State for a 1:00 PM Saturday tip.
  • Wahoos (prolate spheroid) look to avoid missing a bowl game with a victory against Miami at 7:00 PM. The Cavs haven’t been bowling since 2011 and haven’t won a bowl game since 2005.

Barbie F*cks It Up Again

I’m not a big fan of “Angry Takedown” pieces, but this one of Barbie: I Can be…a Computer Engineer is worth your time–if only to expose you to this piece of trash book.

This is where you assume Skipper will be like, “Oh, why do you need boys? We can do it ourselves! Let’s learn and work hard and do things all on our own because a sense of accomplishment and knowledge are powerful weapons for adulthood.”

But no. Nope. Barbie’s just fine ending her work with the “design ideas” and a laugh. She’ll need the boys before she’ll have a “REAL GAME.”
