Good morning, RVA! It’s 35 °F this Thanksgiving Day Eve Morning. Highs today may stretch into the upper-50s, but you could wear your long underwear all day and feel good about it. Tomorrow looks absolutely brilliant, with lots of sun, highs in the upper-60s, and a solid chance of food naps.

Governor McAuliffe said yesterday that he’d flat out veto any legislation barring Syrian refugees from Virginia, the impetus being legislation planned by General Assembly Republicans. He also said that that legislation is a waste of time as governors can’t go about violating the Constitution of the United States. Good for that guy! As more and more of the folks running (or hoping to run) our country publicly proclaim their support for all kinds of insane things, it can feel like we’ve totally gone off the rails. Here’s the best piece I’ve read about what normal people can do to slowly move things back on track–you know, back to where we’re not off-handedly referencing the Japanese internment camps as a precedent for contemporary policy.
Speaking of the General Assembly, I totally forgot that the 2016 session is about to start and legislators have been busy submitting their bills. We’ll have lots of GA coverage next year, but nothing’s stopping you from digging in right now!
Kind of big restaurant news from Karri Peifer at the RTD: Secco Wine Bar will move from Carytown to the old Buddy’s spot. I imagine that the new space has seen some things, things that would make Secco blush.
I’m linking to this Vox explainer about Laquan McDonald and the Chicago police officer that shot him 16 times and killed him (the officer’s now been charged with 1st degree murder), but be aware that the video included is graphic.
I’m not sure what prompted it, but I’ve seen a couple of articles today about a DEADLY KISSING BUG THAT IS IN YOUR HOUSE KILLING YOU RIGHT NOW. It is true that Triatomine bugs live in the South and can carry the parasite that causes Chagas disease. It is also true that Chagas disease can be fatal. But, thirdly, it is true that risk of infection is low and medication usually results in a cure–more on Snopes. Regardless of that last sentence, I still feel like they’re on me.

But Phelps-Roper had loved Brittany Murphy in “Clueless,” and she felt an unexpected pang–not quite sadness, but something close–over her death. As she continued scrolling through Twitter, she saw that it was full of people mourning Murphy. The contrast between the grief on Twitter and the buoyant mood in the basement unsettled her. She couldn’t bring herself to post a tweet thanking God for Murphy’s death. “I felt like I would be such a jackass to go on and post something like that,” she said.
