Good Morning, RVA: Come on, Monday!

Get your act together out there.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 41 °F and rainy and that’s today. Temperatures may increase slightly throughout the day and the chance of rain may decrease slightly, but this is basically what we’ve got to work with.

Water cooler

Police are reporting Richmond’s 33rd murder of 2015. At 3:25 AM on Saturday police, responding to the report of gunshots, found a body lying in a drainage ditch on the 4600 block of Southwood Parkway. On this date last year, Richmond had seen 41 murders.

What a dismal day! I’m not sure online retailers could have dialed up better weather to convince folks to stay inside and shop. We’ve got our own deal going on today, too: 20% off all orders of RVA merch. Get it before the sun comes out and you are tempted to leave your computers inside and go for a walk!

I missed this written tour of the Virginia Capital Trail by Edwin Slipek in last week’s Style. It’s like watching a GoPro video of someone riding the trail but with words for your mind.

It’s been a while, but here’s one of those delightfully bizarre anonymous editorials from the RTD. This one’s tangentially about beer…and also the Harvard-Yale football game. It also mentions McSorley’s in Manhattan, which reminded me of this amazing 1940 longread in the New Yorker about that pub.

As the Paris Climate Talks start, the New York Times has a wonderful FAQ about climate change. The final question and answer are good: “Is there any reason for hope? If you share this with 50 friends, maybe.” If you’d like to read more about climate change, I loved this (long) piece on Wait But Why about Tesla and how they could change the world.

I am into this list of non-Christmas Christmas movies on Vox. Other than Gremlins and Die Hard, which are clearly the best holiday movies of all time, what are your favorite Christmas movies that aren’t about Christmas?

Sports!

In coaching vacancy new: Memphis head coach Justin Fuente has been hired by Virginia Tech to replace Frank Beamer (defensive coordinator Bud Foster has agreed to stick around). Virginia football coach Mike London has resigned.

  • Rams sunk ODU 76-67.
  • Spiders fell to West Virginia, 59-67, but toppled #14 California, 94-90.
  • Hokies closed Frank Beamer’s final regular season with a 12th straight win over the Wahoos, 23-20. They’ll head to a bowl for the 23rd year in a row.
  • Hokies (roundball) picked up an overtime win against UAB, 82-77, after being dominated by #4 Iowa State, 77-99.
  • Washington beat the Giants, 20-14, and somehow are now first place in the NFC East–despite their 5-6 record.

This morning’s longread

American Horror Story: The Cecil Hotel

A perfectly creepy read for a dreary day when you don’t really want to get back to work.

That was, until February 13, when the LAPD summoned the public’s help again. This time, the department released a video. They wouldn’t confirm it at the time, but the video was taken by the Cecil Hotel’s elevator security camera in the early hours of February 1. It was, it turns out, the last known footage of Lam. And it was so strange, so creepy, so inexplicable that the release turned the case inside out.
