Good Morning, RVA: By your powers combined…

Great temps, afternoon thunderstorms, and a cloudy night…today is a mixed bag.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 50 °F, and despite the impending afternoon thunderstorms, today’s temperatures will stretch into the low 80s! You have until 2:00 PM to luxuriate in the warm sunny weather before everything comes crashing down / a cold front moves through.

Happy Earth Day! Today we “celebrate earth and the concept of peace”, which was originally celebrated in 1970 on the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere–which kind of seems like global East Coast bias. You can celebrate Earth Day this weekend at two local events: Richmond Earth Day Festival and RVA Earth Day.

Broadway in Richmond has announced their 2014-2015 season, which includes The Book of Mormon.

Another day, another astronomical event ruined by stupid clouds. The Lyrid meteor shower peaks tonight, although due to all of the city-kid light pollution and cloud cover, you may have a tough time seeing anything worthwhile. The meteors appear to originate from Vega, so look to the northeast starting around 10:00 PM. If clouds ruin your fun, the shower lasts through Friday.

In a letter to shareholders, Netflix announced that they would raise prices for new members this quarter. They can do whatever they want as long as I can keep watching Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Overcoming impostor syndrome

While focused on programming, this look at imposter syndrome has some powerful takeaways for anyone whose job is to solve problems (aka everyone). It also dovetails nicely with yesterday’s longread.

I quietly avoided doing things I didn’t think I’d be good at, even though the only way to get better is to do them. I had put things I could do and things I wasn’t good at into separate mental buckets, and saw these artificial groupings as static and impermeable. That was the biggest loss for me, not learning and doing more things because I was afraid I couldn’t.
