Good Morning, RVA: An anomaly

Rain and cooler temperatures coming soon.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 63 °F, and today’s looking about ten whole degrees cooler than yesterday’s unexpected sauna. This morning starts bright and shiny, but this afternoon brings with it a drop in temperatures and a boring chance of showers.

Water cooler

Orbital Sciences’ attempt at launching an Antares rocket from launchpad 0A at the Wallops Flight Facility failed yesterday. The rocket encountered an “anomaly” seconds after liftoff and exploded. Luckily no one was injured, but the rocket and its cargo were lost and the launchpad possibly damaged. Crazily, the engines used in the Antares rocket are stockpiled Russian NK-33 engines built in the 1970s.

Read the RTD’s recap of last night’s Brat-Trammell debate if you want, but you can probably guess who says what about which topic. I will say that Randolph-Macon’s president calling the university the “cradle of congressmen” makes me feel mildly uncomfortable.

Bed bugs were found–and exterminated–in a cubicle in City Hall. “No other infestation was found outside of the problem cubicle.” Sick.

Marvel has announced nine new movies, completing Phase 3 of their Cinematic Universe. The staggering list begins with Dr. Strange in 2016 and ends with Avengers: Infinity Wars, Part 2 in 2019. Stuck in the middle there is 2018’s Captain Marvel, Marvel’s first female-led film. I love Captain Marvel and had a hard time not starting this sentence with “OMG OMG OMG.”

Piccola’s, which is where I went immediately after getting married to order a slice of pizza, is splitting into three different restaurants: Piccola’s (which will stay the same, thank god), Piccola New Style (an Eastern European spot), and Piccola Crepe Café. Karri Peifer has more details, almost all of which make me raise a single eyebrow.

Sports!

  • The Royals made it happen and forced Game 7 of the World Series with a 10-0 crushing of the Giants last night. The final game, the end of baseball season, is tonight at 8:07 PM.
  • Capitals host the Redwings tonight at 7:30 PM.
  • The straightforwardly named College Football Playoff announced their top four teams: Mississippi State, Florida State, Auburn, and Mississippi.

Personal Productivity

Having a productivity system, isn’t just about not forgetting stuff. It’s about getting more done, more efficiently in a way that makes sense to your brain.

I’ve become personally attached to what my productivity systems and apps enable me to do more efficiently and effectively…Productivity needs to be taken personally. If you don’t take it personally then you’re not going to come close to realizing your full potential. There’s no bigger waste of time than that.
