First Fridays quietly welcomes its 10th season

Friday night was not only the kick off to Labor Day weekend, the last summer hoorah; it was also the anniversary of a Richmond tradition. The 10th anniversary of First Friday’s Art Walk was not marked by any special celebration -- they're saving that for the October installment -- but it was a normal First Friday, which is unusual enough.

The monthly gathering was exactly as it should be. Galleries and the streets themselves showcased the creativity of Richmond. Spectacles such belly dancers, glass blowers, and roller derby skaters marked the decade. Sculptures of recycled jewelry and photographs of models clad in Renaissance era clothing, sporting spaghetti stuffed mouths were just some of the pieces suspended from walls and ceilings. The terrible, the great, the profound and the silly (depending on who is viewing) exists in one strip of broad for one night per month. Long live First Friday!
