RVA recognized as a bicycle-friendly city by League of American Bicyclists

Pushing for Richmond to become more bike-friendly? Your efforts are not in vain, as a national bicycle-related organization has just recognized #RVA.

Yesterday, the League of American Bicyclists announced it has awarded the city of Richmond bronze status among the organization’s list of Bicycle Friendly Communities.

“This latest round of BFC awards proves yet again that any city–regardless of size or geography–can take cost-effective steps to increase bicycling in their community,” said League President Andy Clarke. “Cities are embracing biking as a means to save money, reduce congestion, improve health, and boost their economy.”

Five levels of recognition are awarded by the League of American Bicyclists: diamond, platinum, gold, silver, and bronze. The city’s bronze status is the first recognition that the League has given Richmond.

In response to the announcement, Jakob Helmboldt, the city’s pedestrian, bicycle, and trails coordinator, said the award was “due in large part to the efforts by stakeholders to begin coalescing efforts to improve conditions, the City’s commitment to move initiatives forward, and the strong bike culture that has developed organically here in Richmond.”

He said he would like for the city to attain gold status by 2015, when Richmond hosts the UCI World Road Cycling Championship.

YAY! (also, really? it always feels like we have such a long way to go.)

Fell into cycling as a matter of neccesity, but have come to love it. I have definitely seen an increase in the number of bikes on the road, especially in the Fan and museum district.
