Animal Care & Control announces record pet adoptions

RVA adopted (at least) 86 cats and dogs last week. Good on you, RVA!

The City’s Animal Care & Control announced that a record 86 pets were adopted and fostered during last week’s Holidays promotion in which pet adoption fees were reduced.

The adoptions were needed to relocate animals during the recent demolition phase of a $2.6 million improvement and expansion project that began last April.

Pets remain available for adoption for a $100 fee Wednesday through Friday from 1:00 – 7:00 PM, Saturday from 12:00 – 5:00 PM, and Sunday from 12:00 – 4:00 PM. Richmond Animal Care and Control is located at 1600 Chamerlayne Avenue.

A record number of homeless pets were placed into foster homes and adopted during Richmond Animal Care & Control’s Homes for the Holidays promotion last week. Shelter volunteers, pet rescue organizations and staff found permanent and temporary homes for 86 pets in need of immediate relocation during the shelter’s building renovation. Demolition has begun on the second phase of a $2.6 million improvement and expansion project that started in April.

Shelter Operations Supervisor Chuck Marchant hopes the number will increase over the next week so that more pets may be placed into loving homes before Thanksgiving. “We are thrilled that the Richmond pet loving community came through for us in such a huge way,” Marchant said. “I believe our incredible volunteers, rescue partner organizations and staff texted, tweeted and face booked everyone they know to help the cats and dogs here in need of homes,” added Marchant.

Cats, dogs, puppies and kittens are available for adoption Wednesday through Friday, from 1 – 7 p.m., Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Adopted pets are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heart-worm tested (dogs) FIV/FELV tested (cats) and micro-chipped. Those interested in adopting must complete an application and pay an adoption fee of $100. Cats and kittens may be adopted two for the cost of one, and select pets qualify for a fee-waived adoption with an approved application. Richmond residents must also purchase a $10:00 annual pet license for each pet. Richmond Animal Care & Control is located at 1600 Chamberlayne Avenue. Adoptable pets may be seen online at www.RichmondGov.com/animals. The adoption phone number is (804) 646-5575. Donations of blankets, towels, pet carriers, cages, canned cat food, pet treats and toys are always needed.
