78-year-old woman killed on Cedar Street

Police are reporting Richmond’s first homicide of 2014

Police have arrested the victim’s son, Ronnie S. Cook and charged him with murder, robbery, and grand larceny.

Note: originally we reported the victim was 70 years old.

At 4:41 PM on January 5th, police were called to the 1900 block of Cedar Street where they found 78-year-old Emma Cook stabbed to death.

At approximately 4:41 p.m. this afternoon, a family member found a female unresponsive in an apartment in the 1900 block of Cedar Street and called police.

WRIC has a few more details:

“This is unbelievable,” said Alicia Rasin, who was a friend of Cook’s for more than 30 years. Rasin says Cook was retired from working in public schools. “She was a custodian for many, many, many years,” Rasin said. “She would feed anyone; she would do anything for anyone.”

2013 saw 37 homicides in Richmond, nine in the East End. 2013’s first homicide took place on January 21st.
