RTD profile of Garth Larcen and Positive Vibe Cafe

A Southside staple continues to make a difference.

RTD sits down with Garth Larcen the owner behind Positive Vibe Cafe. The Positive Vibe Foundation has for the past 10 years trained and employed people with disabilities in the restaurant industry and provided the neighborhood with a unique dining destination in Stratford Hills.

Running a restaurant, even for a good cause, isn’t without its trials but through it all the Vibe still stands.

The Vibe has weathered other downturns — “up and down” is an accurate way to describe the business — and is always seeking ways to attract a broader audience. Some ideas work, some don’t.

A while back, the initiative was a coffee bar. It never caught on, not even with offers of free coffee. The most recent wrinkle is a lounge bar with craft beers and wine that Larcen hopes will provide a slightly different atmosphere that could lead to more revenue and customers and, in the end, improve the support for the training program.
