Liner Notes:
I am completely drained. The holidays always seem to suck the life right out of me. I could go on and on about having my bank account hijacked, cleaning off the graffiti some asshole painted on my house or how much the Redskins treat me like a battered wife, but I just don’t have it in me. Instead of boring you with my complaints, my friend Tommy wrote something worth reading about someone with real problems. Maybe you can help him out. Here’s what he wrote (reprinted with kind permission by the author)…

When I moved into this place a few years back, I noticed my neighbors behind me had a yellowish dog that stayed chained up in their yard, at what was pretty much the furthest point from their house, right by the fence to my yard.

Ed. Ed the dog.

Sometimes, Ed was actually in my yard. Still chained up, but he would climb over the fence and sit on my side of it, which was fine with me, except I worried about him accidentally hanging himself on the way over.

I sort of got to know Ed’s people a little, and made a casual friendly inquiry about Ed, and why he never got to run around and play, or go in the house, but never got a very specific answer.

When Richmond passed a law banning tethering a dog for more than a brief period, Ed got moved into a 12′x12′ pen. Ed’s people noticed that I visited with him, and even hung up a leash so that I could bring him over to my yard and let him play some times. I continued to make casual, friendly inquiries, but still, the only time I have ever seen him out of his pen or not on a chain is when I bring him over to play.

Fast forward to last week. I was at the fence, talking to my neighbor, and he commented on how much Ed likes me. He noticed that Ed wags his yellowish stump of a tail and rubs his face up against the chain link when I come in the back yard. He didn’t leave it at that, either.

My neighbor told me how Ed isn’t getting any younger, and how his wife had made Ed move out doors.

Then he asked if I would like to take Ed.

I would like to. Ed is a good, very friendly dog. The idea of him living in a 12×12 pen for the rest of his years breaks my heart. When I bring him over to my yard, he runs laps until he gets tired, relieves himself in some place where he won’t have to sleep right next to it, and then sits next to my back door, the furthest point from his cage.

However, my basic rule with animals is this: I don’t want ANYONE to ever take on an animal if they cannot be responsible for it, and really give it a good life, for the rest of the animal’s life. After all, that is why Ed lives in a 12×12 pen. I already have a bunch of cats, and I’m stretched tight as a drum financially already, and I’m certain that Ed is going to need a checkup and a shot or two at the vet as he is now.

So…

Who wants Ed? In the perfect scenario in my mind, someone with kids who can play with him in a yard, maybe take him to the dog park every now and then. He is super friendly, not the slightest bit bitey, and getting a little gray around the muzzle. He is already fixed, and supposedly did live in a house at some point (which would have been at least five years ago). He looks like the kind of dog that would spend a lot of time over the winter snoring in front of a fireplace, but if nobody can take him, he will be spending another winter in a plastic dog house shivering.

There is a rescue place that might be able to take him, but I want to see if I can find him a forever home without burdening them first, and then sending him to be fostered until that happens.

He looks like he might be part shepherd mixed with something yellow, and his legs look ever so slightly too shorter than they maybe should be.

I’ve sort of randomly tagged people, not necessarily people that I think can take him, just people that might, or might know someone. Tell a friend. I can bring him over to my place any time if you want to come over and meet him.

Thanks.

So ladies and gentlemen, if anyone wants to help Ed out leave a message here and I’ll arrange a meeting. As always, I hope you enjoy the show…
