Liner Notes:
Chris – I’ll just put this out there and just let me know your thoughts, I don’t know if it could ever work but I thought I’d at least put it out there. As you know now I work a little bit for RVANews.com. We are a relatively new online magazine that loves and loves and loves Richmond. we have made a habit of tracking down those folks that corporate Richmond has screwed over a bit – well, we got Pete Humes to come over and write for us after he left Brick. Anyhow, I don’t know if there is a way to work a podcast or something on the site, I don’t know how interested you are but if you want a place to come to, or to turn your listenership to maybe we could work something out. we really cant offer very much money at all but we are growing and never want anyone to do anything for free – that is important to us. anyhow, let me know what you think and take a look at the site at www.rvanews.com. all that to say we appreciate what you do, what you’ve given to Richmond and would love to help that continue.
Best,
Matt
It’s been a little over a year since this e-mail from Matt White showed up in my inbox. After I walked out of my radio gig at WCLM, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do next. I met with various folks and heard various pitches, but nothing ever came out of those meetings over than assurances of future meetings. The only people I met during that time that didn’t treat me as a curiosity was Matt and Ross. In fact, they seemed to be the only people that actually got what I was doing. Radio people always seemed more enamored with my ability to secure advertising dollars from fickle markets that eluded them than as an actual on air talent. It was obvious to me that the only reason they set up these meetings was to see how they could pilfer advertisers and contact numbers. For one reason or another, they could never put the 2 and 2 together that the Bopst Show was a moderate success because of the music that I played and the way I presented it.
That is something you either know or don’t. Matt and Ross understood.
This week’s installment of the Bopst Show marks my one year anniversary on this site. To celebrate this occasion, this week’s show is full of musical moments that if they were played over the airwaves, I would be fined and or jailed for playing them. And that is what makes this site special; Scott and Ross (the overlords at RVANews) let me do my show as I see fit. They have never edited me or told what I can or can not do. That’s a trick that the big boys, confounded by modern technology, have yet to learn. They still feel compelled to edit. Why is this? Simple. They are scared of freedom. It is a peculiar mindset for an industry struggling to remain relevant in an age of infinite possibility and one that will ultimately solidify their demise.
Again, freedom of expression can not be faked, emulated or assimilated. It either is or isn’t. Frauds are easily exposed with any reasonably functioning bullshit detector. I suggest that you use yours often and frequently.
This site (and the blogs that shape it) was born of a creative vision that can not be faked. Over the past year, I have come to appreciate it not only for posting my show, but for the wealth of local information that isn’t sanitized for my supposed protection. It is a real representation of our city and I am proud to have my show be a small piece of it.
But do you want to know what makes doing these shows super awesome fantastic? They pay me to do it. That’s important because homey has bills to pay. As much as I like the site and appreciate what they do, I wouldn’t be doing this if I wasn’t getting paid. And that’s important. As newspapers slash staff, they are increasingly relying on blogger’s content to fill the void without giving them any monetary compensation. It’s a nice deal for them. They get content free of charge or, if they do pay, it is a miniscule fraction of what they used to have to pay for articles. This is how they are adopting to the new world order. You, the content provider, making less and less while they can horde more of the precious advertising dollar.
God knows how much time I have put into all of these shows. For every hour of Bopst Shows you hear, there are about 7 to 8 hours dedicated to creating them. A lot of this time can be blamed on working with an old computer, but I take this job of (hopefully) entertaining you here very seriously. And that’s what they pay me for: to keep you entertained with other forms of stimulation you will not find any place else.
It is my hope that over this last year I have been successful in doing that. Enjoy the show…
The set list for this week’s show is posted here. All previous show set lists (52 as of this writing) are on my blog.
Until Next Time:
Stay Clean,
