Tax-free back-to-school shopping this weekend

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: sales tax holiday! Time to stock up on those pens and pencils, folks.

Most Richmond kids don’t return to the classroom for a month, but this weekend is the time to get started on your back-to-school shopping. Friday, August 2nd through Sunday, August 4th, Virginians can stock up on everything (well, most things) the kids will need to get through the school year–without paying sales tax.1

Items exempt from sales tax this weekend include school or office supplies that cost $20 or less per items, as well as most articles of clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less each. There is no limit to the number of items you can purchase without paying the sales tax, as long each item meets the holiday restrictions.

To learn more about this year’s tax holiday guidelines and to check out a complete list of sales tax-exempt items, visit tax.virginia.gov. It’s pretty extensive (particularly the eligible clothing items), so even those sans wee ones who are just looking for some good deals will not be disappointed.

Footnotes

  1. FYI: the back-to-school thing is just how they frame the tax holiday, but everyone can take advantage of the discounts. It’s not like they ask for Proof of Parenting at the register or something.
