School readiness program for rising kindergarteners

Virginia Preschool Initiative teams up with other local organizations to help get rising kindergarteners ready for school.

Richmond Public Schools’ Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) is teaming up with the Literacy Institute at VCU’s ExCELL program and the Partnership for Families Northside to offer a school readiness program for rising kindergartners. This five-week program (entitled “Ocean Adventures”) begins on June 23rd and runs through July 24th.

From the Richmond Public Schools press release:

“Each ocean-themed week uses story books and activities that focus on vocabulary and comprehension to strengthen early language and literacy skills for students with no previous formal preschool experience. Kindergarten and pre-k teachers co-teach classes to assist students who will be transitioning to kindergarten in the 2014-15 school year.”

Classes are Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with breakfast and lunch provided daily. This year’s programs will be located at Linwood Holton Elementary and Overby-Sheppard Elementary. To participate in the program, students must reside in the Carver, Ginter Park, Linwood Holton, Stuart or Overby-Sheppard school zones.
