New storytime structure at Richmond Public Libraries
The city’s libraries switch things up to offer more purposeful support for children and their parents and caregivers.
If your neighborhood library’s storytime is part of your family’s routine, be sure you check the calendar before making the trek over. With the start of the new year, Richmond Public Libraries introduced a new structure to these well-loved weekly events.
RPL’s storytimes will now operate in six-week sessions, each built around a theme. This new structure will allow the librarians to provide more purposeful support for the kids and their parents/caregivers. During these sessions, librarians will also model specific literacy strategies you can use at home with your children. You’re encouraged to attend each meeting of a session to get the most out of it.
But please note: there will be a break at the end of each six-week session when there will be no storytime. The staff will use this time to attend training and provide other library programming.
RPL currently offers storytimes for babies (0-18 months); toddlers (18-36 months); preschoolers (3-5 years); and families (kids of all ages are welcome). Parents must attend storytime with their children.

And yet my branch STILL doesn’t offer storytimes on Saturdays. Sigh. As a parent with a pretty standard M-F work schedule, every Saturday morning for years I drove directly past by city library branch on my way to the storytime offered at the Henrico library.
