New restaurants: June 2013

“Only” two restaurants opened in June, bringing RVA’s total of new places to eat in 2013 to 23.

If you’re trying to eat at all of 2013’s new restaurants and have fallen behind a bit, now is a good time to catch up. Only two new dining spots opened in June, but the list of places scheduled to open in the near future is pretty impressive and will keep you busy for quite a while.

Haiku Sushi and Lounge

The new Haiku Sushi and Lounge opened up on June 1st in the old Sensei spot downtown. A couple of the folks involved in Haiku come straight from Eat Restaurant Partner’s Osaka, so there’s plenty of talent and experience involved. They’ve got a pretty deep beer menu and a handful os sakes to try as well.

Haiku Sushi and Lounge is located at 2222 E. Cary Street and is open for dinner every day of the week, and lunch Monday – Saturday.

Sugar Shack Donuts

To the dismay of everyone’s waistline and the joy of everyone’s everything else, Sugar Shack Donuts opened up on June 11th. Richmond’s newest doughnut shop, inspired by Voodoo Doughnut in Portland, offers a nice mix of classic doughnut flavors (glaze) and more exotic specimens (Samoas!). Sugar Shack is doing their darndest to serve vegan, gluten-free, and vegan gluten-free doughnuts, but the demand has been so intense that they’re currently retooling their process. Pro tip: don’t sleep on the apple fritters!

Sugar Shack Donuts is located at 1001 N. Lombardy Street and is open Monday – Saturday.
