Garden Wars: Week 1

Our weekly garden battle is back! Now with more garden and more wars than ever!

It’s back! Now with more garden and more wars than ever!

In case you missed it the first couple of times around, Garden Wars is our semi-regular contest that pits a group of amateur gardeners against each other in a weekly TEST OF GARDENING STRENGTH. This year we’ve got four competitors (in no particular order):

  1. Lesley Bruno, director of marketing at the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce • (@lesleybruno)
  2. Erik Bonkovsky, pastor at City Church of Richmond • (@ebonkovsky)
  3. Scott Pharr, co-founder of RVANews (that’s us!) • (@scottpharr)
  4. John Sarvay, founder of Floricane • (@sarvay)

Each week the four competitors will submit three pictures and you, the voting public, will decide who’s garden reigns supreme! To the victor goes…honor? Maybe some stuff? We don’t really know, but definitely honor!

Here’s this week’s submissions, and don’t forget to vote below.

You should know that we are new at this and fully expected everything to die of neglect.

Our community garden sits at a busy intersection, five blocks from home, so let’s just say we’re not out there weeding in our boxer shorts (looking at you Scott Pharr).

Our hands down winners thus far are the squashes. Our first of many (hopefully) happy squash recipients was Susan Howson!

Erik Bonkovsky

A reclaimed Fan alley sprouts with Spring: arugula, beets, green beans, and sugar snap peas.

Cool weather crops are starting make way for the warmer months. Here’s one of our batches a lettuce, including a fun game: Where’s Slugo!

I couldn’t pass up using my daughter Kyla in my Sugar Snap Peas picture! Mainly because I used her in Garden Wars…two years ago!

This year I’m continuing to grow new plants throughout the summer for a constant flow of veggies. Here are a couple of cukes that I will transplant in about two weeks.
