FARMERS MARKET SWEEP

Now you can shop local, just like the Pilgrims did! While all the big grocery stores are battlezones of aggressive behavior and crushing disappointment, the farmers market is buzzing with people in holiday mode chirping “Happy Thanksgiving!” and offering awkward but warm poncho-hugs.

Today there are two farmers market options for your last-minute ingreed needs: The West End Farmers Market will be open today from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM with a handful of vendors, including Bella Grove, Greenway Beef, Waverly Farms, River City Cookies, and Designer Pastries. Then from 2:00 to 5:00 PM, GrowRVA’s South of the James Market will be open in Forest Hill Park with nearly 30 vendors, including Reyes Farm, Walnut Hill Farm, Thinking of You Creations, Steve Haas Mushrooms, and Cold Country Salmon.

GIVE AND GIVE AGAIN

The holidays aren’t all parades and dog shows. Thanksgiving can be a pretty tough day when just putting food on the table is a struggle. Richmond Magazine highlights a few good ways to help people right now, and HandsOn Greater Richmond has an excellent guide to holiday volunteering to take you through the end of the season and beyond.

Plus, on December first, A Case for Hope kicks off their holiday Gift and Necessities Drive at Pasture. Drop off some goodies for kids who need them, and then treat your altruistic self to some pimento cheese, and maybe even take home a door prize.

FANCY IN THE FAN

At last, we can finally answer the question “What’s going to be in the old Buddy’s place?” and start asking “What’s going to be in the old Secco spot?”! Secco owner Julia Battaglini announced yesterday that they are moving, but thank God, not far. After over five years in Carytown, Secco will soon call the former Buddy’s space at 325 N. Robinson Street its home. According to Richmond.com, we can look forward to Secco’s brilliantly-curated wine list and European-inspired small plates from the comfort of a Fan-area patio in the summer of next year.

LET’S ALL GO TO THE MALL!

When’s the last time you said that? For me, it was probably 17 years ago when I was harboring a huge crush on the guy that worked at Concert Connection at Valley View Mall (before he moved over to Saturday Matinee, but don’t worry, I still found him. Oh, I found him.) ANYWAY, I finally have a reason to go to a mall again: It’s Regency’s #RVAHoliday Pop-up, which runs from November 27th to December 24th and features over a dozen gifty/sparkly/spicy pop-up shops including Carytown Teas, Little House Green Grocery, Ladles and Linens, and Handmade and Homegrown (a collaboration between the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen and GrowRVA)!

MEMORIES BY GRAHAM

Graham Haddock, owner of Cakes by Graham announced this week that, due to a task-specific tremor that’s afflicted him for several years, he will no longer be making the cakes that have made him a household name in Richmond for the last 22 years. According to his Facebook post, Haddock will stop making custom cakes in December, and he will make his final wedding cake next summer.

FROM ELSEWHERE…

Garden & Gun has named the winners of the 6th Annual Made in the South Awards, and the overall winner1 goes to Blanc Creatives, a Charlottesville-based maker of badass carbon steel cookware.

I would buy a real subscription to Gout Magazine.

SIP: LITTLE HOUSE COFFEE STOUT

Ardent Craft Ales teamed up with Little House Green Grocery to create a coffee stout with the LHGG coffee blend, and you can get your hands on it starting this Friday.

BITE: CHOCOLATE’S BY KELLY’S CHOCOLATE BALSAMIC VINEGAR

Yeah, chocolate vinegar sounds a little cuckoo, but open your mind up and let this change your game. Chocolates by Kelly’s chocolate balsamic marries smooth, round cocoa flavor with tart balsamic, and the result is something unique and awesome. Drizzle it on roasted pork tenderloin, or serve it with cheese and fruit. Or just drink the dang stuff like nobody’s watching.

  1. No, there is not an “overalls” category, even though this IS the Made in the South Awards.
