Everyone loves ‘em, and more events focused on them are popping up everywhere you look. This Sunday, May 20th, marks the city’s first ever Food Cart Derby held at the 17th Street Farmers Market from 11am-6pm. They’ve got 21 food carts in the lineup, 13 local breweries, and a few bands. You go to brunch every Sunday, make sure you do this instead because it will be well worth your time!

Food Carts Include:

Sustenance Truck, Dressed and Pressed, Mister Softee RVA, Station 2, Crossroads Coffee & Ice Cream, Boka Truck, Rooster Cart, RVA Vegan bike-powered cart, Kenn-Tico, Papa Ningo, Sausagecraft, Mobile Munchies, Pizza Tonight, Olio Food Cart, Chef Kelly's Taqueria , Hawk's BBQ, Chupacabra, Habeneros Tacos, Thinking of You, Joey’s Hot Dogs, and Dollop Desserts.

Local Brews Include:

Starr Hill, Devil's Backbone, Hardywood Park, Legend Brewery, Midnight, Lost Rhino, O'Connor, Roanoke Railhouse, Madd Fox, Wolf Hills Brewing, Bull and Bones, Big Daddy and Blue Lab.

You’ve got local brews covered on Sunday, so adding some local wine would probably be a good idea. On May 19th and 20th you can take a mini road trip, less than an hour, to check out the Rassawek Spring Jubilee. The two day event is a mix of wine festival and heritage show--all with a family friendly vibe. The heritage portion includes a fishing derby, a steam train, live music, artisans, local produce, and more. The wine side of things will feature nine local vineyards. Pack up some chairs and snacks and enjoy the weather before we hit the “it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity” season. Visit their website for pricing, times, and event details.

Last week we ran a feature on Dixie Donuts and everyone lost their minds. Well, hold on to your shorts because they are opening TODAY! Delicious donuts for everyone (not to mention the double fried chicken and frites)! Dixie Donuts is located at 2901 West Cary Street across from The Byrd. There’s a huge donut on the storefront--you can’t miss it.

This year will mark the 5th annual of Broad Appetit, the food festival that allows you to sample some of Richmond’s best restaurants for just $3 per small plate. You can graze your way down Broad Street tasting anything you see for a few buckaroos all while listening to local tunes and sipping on adult Virginia-based beverages. Sounds great, right!? Well they upped the ante this year with an “Off Broad Appetit” event hosted by Richmond Magazine the night before. On Saturday, June 2nd you can dine with some of the east coast’s best chefs at Pasture. The following six chefs will be cooking dishes featuring local food for $150 per ticket.

Take a look at the lineup:

Sean Brock --Chef at Husk in Charleston, South Carolina; 2010 James Beard winner for Best Chef Southeast

Jen Carroll--Chef & Owner of Carroll Couture in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Top Chef All-Star contestant

Dean Maupin--Chef at Keswick in Charlottesville, Virginia; Star Chefs 2010 Rising Star

Edward Lee--Chef at 610 Magnolia in Louisville, Kentucky; Challenger on Food Network’s “Iron Chef America”

Bryce Caron--Pastry Chef at Blackbird, Chicago, Best New Pastry Chef, Food & Wine Magazine

Jason Alley--Chef at Comfort and Pasture Restaurants in Richmond, VA; Star Chefs 2010 Rising Star

Ho there, reader of RSS feeds!
