Black History Month: Celebrating through cider

In one of the most exciting ways we’ve seen to celebrate Black History Month, Blue Bee Cider presents “Cider in Black History.”

On Saturday, February 28th, Blue Bee Cider–in cooperation with Virginia Winery Distribution–acknowledges the role that African-Americans played in the development and production of cider.

For $8, you get a lecture from Sarah Meacham, Associate Professor of History at VCU, who will fill you with many thoughts and feelings about the largely unsung heroes of cider. Meacham is the reigning expert on alcohol (even more so than your buddy Mitch, no matter what he says to the contrary), and her book, Every Home a Distillery: Alcohol, Gender, and Technology in Colonial Chesapeake is delightfully specific. She’s written about the subject for multiple publications, including the Virginia Magazine for History and Biography, which is old as the hills, it turns out.

You’ll also get tastings of three different ciders in your own souvenir glass from Blue Bee, who will also fill you with many thoughts and feelings about cider itself and how delicious it is.

The discussion, led by Robin Oliver Hill of the Virginia Winery Distribution, will be both educational, entertaining, and invigorating. And not just because of the influence of cider.

Tickets cost $8 for the event, which will be at 12:00 PM on Saturday, February 28th at Blue Bee Cider, 212 W. 6th Street. 21 and over, please.
