Beer News: X chromosomes, musically enhanced brews, dogs, braus

The Betties are radical, the Red Bulls II are not, some dogs are cool, some restaurants are hot.

Betties brewing beer

The River City Beer Betties are great! But who are these beer-brewing ladies, you ask? Robey Martin, writing for Richmond Magazine, gives you each and every detail you seek. If you identify as female and spend all of your free time lautering and fermenting, maybe drop the Betties a line.

Beer is my energy drink

A data point: The Richmond Kickers fans I know definitely drink more beer than the other sports folks I know. This weekend, the Kickers play to the crowd by offering DC Brau’s The Corruption IPA for delicious hoppy consumption during the game against the New York Red Bulls II. The New Yorkers may have their watery, radioactively-colored energy drink, but we have beer. Ice cold America beer.

Style’s Best Restaurant Beer list

Style Weekly dropped their 2015 Best of Richmond list(s). Two of the categories are strictly beer-focused: Best Restaurant Beer List and Best Local Brewery. You will be able to guess the winners of each of these categories.

Mekong in a magazine

There’s an industry magazine for everything–including the full-service restaurant industry. FSR magazine looks toward Mekong as the shining example of how a full-service restaurant can add a killer beer program to their offerings.

My dogs are barking

Strangeways newest beer offering is made with the freshly shorn fur of local, artisanal dogs! Juuuuuust kidding you guys, that would be gross and against several food-related regulations. What they have done, however, is bring back their monthly Yappy Hour–the most recent of which happened just a couple days ago. Now dog lovers have a chance to combine their love of beer and dogs into one probably adorable evening. Best news of all: Yappy Hour will continue throughout the summer.

Secretary of hops and barley

Todd P. Haymore, whom you may know as Virginia’s secretary of agriculture and forestry, has written a piece in the Richmond Times-Dispatch about Virginia’s thriving craft beer industry.

Elsewhere…

Chromatic Dragon in Savannah combines video games and booze under the best name ever created. I’ve always wanted a super chill bar that has a couple dozen old-school arcade games in the back (wait a second, we kind of have this at Strange Matter!).

Philly-based Dock Street Brewing Co. is brewing a beer with Wu-Tang. Like, they’ve connected speakers to a barrel and are playing what looks like Wu-Tang Forever as the beer ages. While Wu-Tang is awesome and that album was very popular with my high school self, I…do not think that this will affect the beer?

Every week a neat beer-related .gif!

Takeovers and releases and things

  • Heritage Brewing will takeover the taps at the Southern Railways Taphouse tonight from 5:00 – 9:00 PM, plus there’s a chance to win a rafting trip down the James.
  • The VMFA, Richmond Mural Project, Art Whino, and Triple Crossing Brewing will throw a street party on Saturday celebrating the VMFA’s new Japanese tattoo exhibit. How do you not go to something called 500 Bricks on Fire?
  • The Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Festival is this Saturday at the Richmond Raceway Complex. Advance ticket sales are closed, but you can buy tickets onsite (cash only). That picture of the pig in the header!
