5 Things for Families

Spring Break is half over! Whether you find that fact sad or exciting, you’re still going to need some ideas to keep the family entertained. Luckily Richmond has anticipated those needs and addressed them like whoa.

1. Skunk Training Observation

It’s Spring Break in Richmond, which means there’s no way you’re not going to spend some time at Maymont with your kids. Why not add something special to the inevitable? Meet Gulliver, Maymont’s resident skunk, and watch as an educator demonstrates how this “laid-back guy” has been trained for special programs. And don’t worry: he’s been de-scented. I leave it to you to decide whether to tell your kids that.

2. Flying Squirrels Home Opener

I feel like the start to the Squirrels’ season means that winter is for real over. As we say in Richmond: Have FUNN! Go NUTZ!

3. Minecraftapalooza!

Dumbarton Library will have a dedicated LAN server up and ready to go so attendees can hang out together in the same Minecraft world. Can you all promise not to tell my son about this?

4. Humpback Whales

There comes a time in every child’s life when he or she vows to become a marine biologist.2 And that time has come for your little ones. Watch as researchers investigate how these 50-foot, 48-ton animals communicate, work together, care for their young, work together, and play. Judging by how much my son and I gasped while watching this trailer, seeing the whole film in IMAX is sure to be amazing:

5. Global Family Concert

Head over to the Westhampton Green (AKA one of THE prettiest places on the University of Richmond Campus) and celebrate traditional music and dance from Japan, Indonesia, West Africa, India, and Brazil. After the concert, you’re welcome to get a closer look at the instruments–and even try your hand at playing them, if you like!
