5 Things

I’m going to assume everyone still likes to drink, because two events are entirely focused around alcohol this week…and the other ones could easily involve it. Celebrate the start of summer appropriately and responsibly, but gosh darn it, celebrate it you will. Or I’m coming for you.

1. Fall Line Fest Happy Hour

Earlier today, someone said “I’m falling fast,” and I said, “FALL LINE FEST?” Because that is how much I think about Fall Line Fest. All the time! Or when someone says something that sounds vaguely like it! Come get stoked about various special announcements regarding this year’s iteration of Richmond’s coolest music, food, and art festival. Oh, and there is alcohol there. Falling fast…into your cups?

  • Thursday, May 22nd • 5:00 – 7:00 PM
  • The Broadberry, 2729 W. Broad Street
  • Free to attend!

2. Rocketts Red Glare

The bombs truly do burst in air at Rocketts Landing, which, contrary to popular belief, was not named as such in order to be convenient for the title of this radical fireworks event. Kick off Memorial Day, this second greatest of all holidays (as it heralds the beginning of summer), with some flash and some bang. But mostly some flash. And also some bang.

  • Sunday, May 25th • 5:30 PM
  • Rocketts Landing, 5000 Old Osborne Turnpike
  • Free!

3. Virginia Renaissance Faire

How great would it be to just don a very long skirt and a very uplifting brassiere and let your hair down at our commonwealth’s very own Ren Faire? Don’t pretend like you don’t know the answer. It would be pretty great. This weekend is “Military Weekend,” which not only means that military folk and their family get in free, but that you get to see EVEN MORE knights on horseback and the like, doing their thing to protect their castles and moats. Extra points if you craft your own flowery headdress.

  • Saturday, May 24th – Sunday, May 25th • see site for times
  • Lake Anna Winery, 5621 Courthouse Road
  • $9 for ages 6 and up, free for military personnel, their families, and all of your tiny tots

4. Blue Bee Charred Ordinary Release Party

I don’t typically throw my weight behind one beer or another, because honestly, guys. It all tastes the same to me. But frigging Blue Bee Cider explodes my entire universe with their dry, delicious, and potent brew. Think you don’t like cider? Holy crap, you are so wrong! Charred Ordinary’s new vintage blows the last sold-out vintage out of the water, supposedly, and that is saying something. Celebrate Memorial Day through the most wonderful of tipsy hazes with several glasses of this delicious potion (and some food, to boot).

  • Monday, May 26th &bull 12:00 – 7:00 PM
  • Blue Bee Cider, 212 W. 6th Street
  • Free to attend!

5. Leaving Iowa

Leaving Iowa…a thing most Iowans want to do. JK, Iowa, I have no idea what you are like, as I am stuck on the Eastern Seaboard with such attractions as “Baltimore” and “Delaware.” Try something new, and try that something at the CAT Theatre, with this magical comedy that will hit you in all the right spots, if you have such things as a family and/or a heart.

  • Friday, May 23rd – Sunday, May 25th • see site for times
  • CAT Theatre, 319 N. Wilkinson Road
  • $13 – $25
