5 Things

We got highbrow, we got lowbrow, we got singers, we got swingers (we don’t actually have swingers)…but we have 5 things to do this weekend!

We got highbrow, we got lowbrow, we got singers, we got swingers (we don’t actually have swingers). We have so many things for you to do this weekend that will take you inside, outside, offsides, and, uh, slapping your sides. Just read on. The good times will roll.

1. Indigo Girls at Groovin@Maymont

I went to the doctor! I went to the mountain! I looked to the children! I drank from the fountain! Speaking of fountains, Maymont has them. And speaking of Maymont, The Indigo Girls will be playing there. Can you even believe it? Plunk down some cash and get ready for some stunning harmonies in a lush natural setting. I mean, seriously. Is this for real?

  • Thurs. Jul. 26 • Gates at 5:30 PM, Music at 6:30 PM
  • Maymont, 1700 Hampton St.
  • $25-45

2. Butterfly Photography Course at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden

We need to have an intervention. Instagram is for showing your pals the world as you know it, framed in some sort of artistic way. It is not Blurry Catstagram or Grainy Drunkstagram. Step into the big leagues by enrolling in a photography course at LGBG with environmental photographer Lynda Richardson. The focus, of course, will be butterflies and other beautiful creepy-crawlies, but you can take your skills with you into the wild.

  • Thurs. Jul. 26, Sat. Jul. 28, and Thurs., Aug. 2 • 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
  • Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Ave.
  • $165-$209

3. Nice People Dancing to Good Country Music

When a Barksdale Theatre and a Theatre IV love each other very much, they get married, and a little while later, a Virginia Repertory Theatre is born. Guys, it’s like the best of two worlds, and two worlds that are no stranger to jazz hands! Check out Nice People Dancing to Good Country Music, by acclaimed playwright Lee Blessing, directed by Steve Perigard. It’s about a bar, which is a good start, and features some country classics. Oh, AND you get to go to Hanover Tavern. Just sayin’.

  • Jul. 13 – Aug. 6 • see site for times
  • Hanover Tavern, 13181 Hanover Courthouse Road, Hanover
  • $10-$38

4. Richmond Kickers’ Food Truck Fest

Food trucks are a national trend that is hitting Richmond where it hurts: …in the tastebuds? Wait, let me try that again. Food trucks are a national trend that is kicking it in Richmond these days. That’s better. OK, it’s like you go get some food, and then you stand around and eat it! Richmond Kickers plans to improve on that experience by offering you an exciting game to watch after you’ve nabbed your taco and have balanced a plate awkwardly on the top of a drink in order to get to your wallet. Watch the Kickz play their USL PRO rivals, the Charlotte Eagles, and attempt not to spit food while you cheer.

  • Sat. Jul. 28 • Fest at 5:30 PM, Game at 7:00 PM
  • Ukrop Park, 5300 Ridgedale Pkwy
  • $5

5. VENETO @ The Roosevelt

If you live in Church Hill, Sunday nights are sad. You drive past The Roosevelt and mourn its dark interior, its upturned chairs. Not this Sunday, mi amigo! The one-year-old RVA favorite opens its giant door for ticketholders to experience the wines of Gabriele Rausse paired with Venetian dishes by chef Lee Gregory. I don’t want to get you all hot and bothered, but olive oil cake is involved. OLIVE OIL CAKE.

  • Sun. Jul. 29 • 7:00 PM
  • The Roosevelt, 623 N. 25th St.
  • $45 + tax/tip
