Enclosed herein are five Things to do this weekend. Each one is mom-appropriate, depending on the mom. Got a unique idea for your own mom? Leave it in the comments below and let us steal it from you post-haste.

1. Compagnia T.P.O.: Farfalle (Butterflies)

I keep reading the description for this over and over again, and I’m not entirely sure I understand it, but I am entirely sure it looks pretty neat. Here are some quotes: “theatre of the senses,” “magical relationship between children and performers,” “sensor-covered mat,” “real, enchanted time,” and, my favorite, “wondrous, other-worldly ‘sensory gardens.’” Basically, what I’m thinking is, you bring your kids and you’re both delighted. I’m also thinking “Did they define farfalle because they think we think it just means a certain shape of pasta? And now I’m thinking, “I could totally eat some pasta.”

  • Fri. May 11 – Sat. May 12 • various times (see site)
  • Cousins Studio Theatre @ The Modlin Center, 28 Westhampton Way, University of Richmond
  • $10 – $20

2. Cap2Cap Bike Ride

Travel from Richmond to Williamsburg the way the early settlers intended: on a bicycle, dude! Go all the way, half the way, a quarter of the way, or 15 miles of the way–whatever brings you the most happiness. Speaking of happiness, the proceeds go towards the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation, whose paved lane of wonder will be completed one day in the near future. So grab your bike and prepare yourself for bands and foods and stuff.

  • Sat. May 12 • 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Rocketts Landing
  • $25 – $75

3. Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

Well, this is awkward. It’s like two people showed up in the same dress to the prom. But hey, if you don’t like cycling, maybe you like jogging. Don’t get all hopeful that the third Thing will be “The Great RVA Laziness Contest”–you should probably exert some sort of aerobic energy in order to make a difference this weekend. WAIT! ALERT! I AM SO WRONG! You can now Sleep In for the Cure, and that’s exactly what some of us might do. Anyway, breast cancer is a terrible thing that I can’t bring myself to joke about, and a 5K is a doable AND fun way to help save the world’s boobs.

  • Sat. May 12 • 7:30 AM
  • Brown’s Island
  • $30 – $35

4. Mother’s Day at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens

If you or your mom or your mom’s mom like music and flowers and scarves, then I suggest you RUN DO NOT WALK to Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens this Sunday for a full day of garden-style charm. They got flowers, they got shopping, they got smooth jazz group Glennroy and Company, they got a la carte dining at the Bloemendaal House. Hey, you know what? Mom or no mom, you should check it out.

  • Sun. May 13 • 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Lunch from 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM, Concert from 1:00 – 4:00 PM)
  • Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Ave.
  • Free concert included with general admission: $11/adult and $7/child

5. FilmRoasters at the Firehouse: Teenage Mother!

It takes all kinds…of mothers. Sometimes they have octuplets and sometimes they tan too much. Sometimes they give you guilt trips and sometimes you deserve it. Sometimes they are appropriately aged and sometimes they are not. Bring funny moms and funny teenage daughters in your life to FilmRoasters at the Firehouse Theater on Sunday night, and listen to hilarious jokesters make hilarious jokes about a 60’s flick called Teenage Mother. You’ll all be convinced by the end that no glove equals no love.

  • Sun. May 13 • 8:00 PM
  • The Firehouse Theater, 1609 W. Broad St.
  • $5
