I’ve been a fan of Reich’s since I was 14 or 15…more than 20 years now, so it was an enormous thrill to hear this piece premiered. Personally, though, the even more amazing thing was meeting Reich the next day at a small Q&A session in the Modlin Center’s basement. He is the first celebrity (if you count him as one) I’ve ever asked to stand for a photo with me. The result is hugely goofy, but I’m glad I have it to remember the occasion. Thanks for the review!

so what are some basic differences in style and composition between reich and glass? because to my pleb ears, it sounds like sufjan and tortoise are ripping phillip glass just as much. I want to know! (so I can sound smart at parties.) also, summarizing the entire body of recorded works from nonesuch records to “wilco” and “the black keys” is unconscionable! still, I thought it was a thoroughly excellent piece.

Good write up. Minimalism I think is best explained “minimally” because to expand on it would undermine the philosophy of the composers. JK…thats my sophisticated joke of the day.

2. In Beethoven’s defense, he was the Steve Reich of the 19th century!!
