New grocery store may be built on long-dormant Ukrop’s site

An unnamed grocer plans to build a 76,000-square-foot grocery store on the site of a formerly planned Ukrop’s Super Market.

A 15-acre site near Wyndham long-slated for a grocery store may finally have a tenant, according to Richmond BizSense.

Ukrop’s Supermarkets purchased the tract along Nuckols Road between Twin Hickory Road and Wyndham Forest Drive back in 2006 and planned to build a grocery store on the site until it sold all of its locations to Royal Ahold in 2010, who replaced the Ukrop’s name with its Martin’s brand.

A Maryland-based developer has submitted plans for a 76,000-square-foot grocery store on the property, but just who may be coming to the heavily-residential area remains to be known.

Ukrop’s Super Markets, Inc., which still owns the property (but currently has the land under contract), cleared the site and installed parking lot curbing for its store, but construction on the grocery store and shops never began. Development on the property should at least allay concerns of neighbors who were irritated by the property’s clearing and subsequent dormant state.

BizSense has details on the plans and some insight on what other businesses are currently weighing their options to locate in the attached, forthcoming shopping center.
