CarMax leases Lady Byrd Hat and moves to Shockoe

CarMax joins other Lady Byrd Hat office tenants such as Butler Royals and The Roseline Financial Group.

From the press release:

Fulton Hill Properties is pleased to announce that CarMax, a Fortune 500 company headquartered in Goochland, is leasing approximately 26,000 s.f. in the Lady Byrd Hat Building at 140 Virginia Street. Built in 1894, the building originally housed the Virginia Paper Company. In 1965, it was home to the Lady Byrd Hat Company. Fulton Hill Properties transformed the 52,000 s.f. building into offices and an entertainment venue in the late 90s.

In 2015, CarMax began a search for downtown space for a new digital and technology innovation center. With open spaces, exposed beams, hardwood floors and canal frontage, the Lady Byrd Hat Building provides the ideal location CarMax was determined to find.

“Not only is the Lady Byrd Hat Building the ideal location for CarMax, the city of Richmond is the ideal location,” said Mayor Jones. “This collaboration supports our strategy for economic growth across disciplines, including creative jobs, and will help attract a young and vibrant workforce downtown.”

This is a successful example of collaboration between the Mayor’s office, a private developer, the Council representative, Venture Richmond, and the RMTA.
