And if bank B buys your mortgage from bank A, while you may get the memo, don't expect that the tax office will.

I just called and got the address changed and the info I
needed to pay the bill online. Apparently they mailed it off on the 13th, but for some reason that mail didn't get forwarded to my new address by the post office.

The DMV & Dept of Finance problem has existed for over 20 years. Why have they not fixed it yet? I was told many years ago that the two systems could not talk to each other and the updated info had to be entered manually. The 30 days to pay the PP tax is really a problem, I guess a call to your city council member or Doug?

As far as the real estate taxes on your home...you should be able to go online and see your accessed value at: http://eservices.ci.richmond.va.us/applications/propertysearch/frmMainSearch.aspx - typically you can get updated info here before your new accessment goes out every January. But of course we don't know how much to pay until council & doug fight it out over the rate.....

Hey gang,

I just spoke with the City's department of finance, and the rep I spoke with said that the DMV doesn't always update their information with the city. In my case, I was still being charged for a vehicle I sold last year. In the case of property being sold or purchased, his advice is to make sure you update with the Dept of Finance within 30 days of updating information with DMV. Who knew?

Ross - that happened to me last year! I got the late fees removed though because I threw a fit about how dumb the system is. You have to call the city department of taxation separately to change your address with them when you move. Good luck finding that instruction anywhere!

Think I need to open an ING account to dump money into so I can use the principal to pay all these taxes yet make a little interest on the side. ;) Eventually I'll accumulate enough to pay the taxes with the interest itself and just let the principal keep compounding.

Damn, my brain hurts. :D

Also the city doesn't necessarily update your address with the Department of Finance when you move. Last time we moved our car tax bill never showed up FOR TWO YEARS. And then we got a bunch of late fees and etc.

IRRITATING.

If you think this is bad wait until you get the real estate tax bill, due June 15th if I remember correctly (not all of us have it built into their house payment).

I got it and thought it was a late notice. I had to dig through my paperwork to make sure I paid my last bill. Expected or no, 30 days is crazy, especially if folks have trouble coming up with the money.

It pleases me to pay taxes with money that was already taxed on a vehicle that I already PAID FOR (and payed sales taxes on, with money that was, of course, already taxed).
