No BS! Brass travelled to Charlottesville to open for Man Man, a mallet-percussion and horn infused indie rock unit. We arrived early and performed our now traditional parade through the downtown mall and into The Southern, the basement room formerly known as the Gravity Lounge. We played a quick, high energy set. Man Man then went on and delivered a frenzied, grooving and super-tight set of their own, complete with face paint and some excellent front-man antics. We joined them onstage for their final pre-encore tune. The night was a blast! Glad to hear that the musical evening in RVA was a good one too.

There is only so much you can do in one night, and we had a Halloween party to go to during the middle set. Wilson won out over Blanchard for both sentimental and artistic reasons. (As time has gone on I've become even less of a fan of Cornell West's faux folksy verbosity, the organizing principle of TB's newest CD and the Modlin Performance.)

Wilson and company were great, both in the (mostly Rory Stuart) originals and in standards like the sped-up "All Blues" and slow, intensely focused "In a Silent Way." Stuart is a fluid and inventive guitarist with a long history of collaboration with Wilson. It was a pleasure to hear Masters and Martucci together again.

Another spectacular evening of music courtesy of Dean C and RVAjazz.
