Jazz rocker and pianist Marco Benevento is playing the Capital Ale House Downtown Music Hall on Thursday. We want you to know about things like this, so here’s some incentive to show up:

The Brooklyn, NY-based indie jazz pianist Marco Benevento takes his critically acclaimed trio featuring bassist Dave Dreiwitz (Ween) and drummer Andrew Barr (Land Of Talk, Surprise Me Mr. Davis, The Slip) to Richmond, VA for the first time on Thursday, February 11 for a headline performance at the Capital Ale House Music Hall.

2009 was a breakout year for Marco Benevento. In February, he released Me Not Me, an album featuring interpretations of songs by My Morning Jacket, Leonard Cohen and Led Zeppelin among others. Touring it over the course of the year across the U.S., Benevento and his trio made a number of high profile performances, including San Francisco Jazz Festival, Earshot Festival and Carnegie Hall.

At the end of 2009, Benevento released his first ever DVD, Live In NYC: The Sullivan Hall Residency, a two hour-plus documentary with performances and interviews from his historical five week 2008 engagement at the downtown New York City venue Sullivan Hall, featuring special guests like Brad Barr, Kaki King, Billy Martin, Joe Russo and Stanton Moore.

Currently, Benevento is in the middle of work on his next full length studio album, which is tentatively scheduled for release in May 2010. If all this wasn’t enough, he also serves as a member of post jazz experimentalists Garage A Trois and indie roots pop band Surprise Me Mr. Davis.

Benevento’s trio was also a performer at last month’s hugely successful NYC Winter Jazzfest and LiveMusicBlog.com took some videos. Is it just the effects on the piano or do I detect some arena jazz mentality reminiscent of Esbjorn Svennson Trio?
