Garden Wars: Week 3

Garden Wars continues! This week: breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, plus your weekly required stunningly cute picture of a kid.

Normally this is the time when we announce last week’s winners and make a joke about how the only prize is honor and garden glory. Well, turns out that’s no longer true! The fine folks over at Plow & Hearth have offered to donate a $200 gift certificate to the winner of this year’s Garden Wars.

Let the competition begin, now in earnest. But first, the results thus far!

Last week’s results

  2. Erik Bonkovsky
  3. Scott Pharr

I thought I’d get a shot of these blackberries before the birds and squirrels stripped the vines bare.

GW-03-J2

Rilo is a Saint Bernard. That’s how big our vegetables are–they dwarf her! OK, she’s a Bernese Mountain Beagle, but the garden is really going to town this summer. That ugly brown patch in the lower right? Our third crop of beans beginning to sprout…

GW-03-J3

Savor the look of this luscious kale, because by the time you see this we’ve chopped it down, sautéed it with garlic and red pepper, and tossed it with Bombolini pasta to feed everyone at our beach house! Don’t worry–there will be more kale this summer…

Our hydroponics experiment. These little guys are slowly coming along as their roots hang in the water bath which is oxygenated by a solar air pump! There is zero dirt in this entire set up.

Caption contest? My wife: “We love him to PEAcies” Me: “He just PEA’d himself”

GW-03-S3

This is one of the three rosemary plants we share with our neighbor. Each year they come back bigger and better!

As promised, LOTS of tomatoes are on the way. Please note that our last name ends in a vowel.

GW-03-L2

Particularly excited about these guys. Cucumber sandwiches are my favorite summer food group.

GW-03-L3

Flowers! Because one must have a touch of color.
